London Trip: Day One

Friday, July 16, 1999

I departed Denver International Airport on the afternoon of Thursday, July 15, and arrived at Gatwick Airport in London on the morning of July 16. Despite only sleeping for less than an hour on the plane, I was excited and ready for a full day of fun.

As usual -- click on the provided image to get a bigger and better image.

I took the Gatwick Express train from the airport to Victoria Train Station in Central London, which was only a few blocks down from the bed and breakfast hotel I stayed at. After checking in at the hotel, I took this picture from the window, which gave me the impression of a very stereotypical "Mary Poppins"-ish view of London.

This is the view of the sidewalk outside the Marne Hotel where I stayed. This stretch of Belgrave Road consists almost entirely of bed and breakfast hotels.

The hotel was a short walk from Buckingham Palace, and I found these huge flocks of tourists when I arrived.

A view of Buckingham Palace.

A view of me, standing in front of the statue of Queen Victoria, in front of Buckingham Palace.

Royal British guards hanging out on their horses acting very British and guard-like.

More of the same.

A typical street in Central London.

Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament.

A shadowy outline of the Houses of Parliament.

The River Thames, from near the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

Typical London street signage. London street signs are very awkward to use in practice... Because they are posted on buildings, if there is no building on the street corner, then there is simply no sign. Even some places where there are buildings on the street corners, there is still no sign, and this makes it very cumbersome to get your bearings after emerging from an Underground (subway train) station.

Picadilly Circus, one of many exciting and fun-packed areas of Central London. I was especially excited to see the big, bright neon advertisement displays that one usually associates with New York or Tokyo.
