DNS: Domain Name System


The Domain Name System (DNS), one of the fundamental building blocks of the Internet, is a distributed mechanism for organizing the Internet's name space, and is responsible for providing translation between IP addresses and host names, as well as storing other information.

This page was inspired by the many questions I constantly get about DNS, and will hopefully clear up some of the mystery of this system.
